Biography for Eric Ravilious RCA (1903 - 1942)

Early life

Ravilous wad brought up in Eastbourne and was educated at Eastbourne Grammar School, followed by the Royal College of Art. Here he was taught by Paul Nash and became friends  with Edward Bawden.

Early Career

His early works included working on the mural in Morley College, London. He also worked on wood engravings for various publications.

In 1930's he started to introduce more colour into his now larger paintings and took up lithography. Starting to establish himself, he was asked to produce designs for Wedgwood, including the celebration mug for the coronation of King Edward VIII 1937. This was withdrawn and revised for the coronations of George VI and Elizabeth II. He also did designs London Transport and others.

Later career

Continuing with his powerful landscapes of the English countryside, in 1937 he was invited to become a War Artist, a number of which are in the Imperial War Museum. He is well known for his pictures depicting life in submarines

Sadly he died at war at a young age
