Biography for Professor Freddie Robins (1965)

Robins find knitted art to be a powerful medium for self-expression and communication because of the cultural preconceptions that continue to surround it. She works to commission and exhibits nationally and internationally, most notably If Not Now, When? Generations of Women in Sculpture in Britain, 1960 – 2022, The Hepworth Wakefield (touring to Saatchi Gallery, London this November) and Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting, Museum of Arts & Design, New York. In 2002 she held her solo exhibition, Cosy, at The Minories. She has been the recipient of numerous grants including Arts Council England/National Lottery, British Council, Crafts Council and AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council). Her work is held in private and public collections including the Government Art Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum, Crafts Council and KODE – kunstmuseene i Bergen, Norway. Robins lives and works with her husband, artist Ben Coode-Adams, in a converted 16th century timber framed barn on a working farm in North Essex.
