Overview

John Piper (1903–1992) was a leading British painter, printmaker, and designer whose work is renowned for his atmospheric depictions of churches, historic buildings, and the British landscape, Piper worked across a remarkable range of media, including painting, screenprints, stained‑glass design, ceramics, photography, and stage sets.

Early Career

Educated at Epsom College and later trained at the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art, Piper moved from early abstraction to a more expressive, naturalistic style that became his signature. His ability to capture mood, structure, and a deep sense of place made his work instantly recognisable.

During the Second World War, Piper served as an official war artist. His powerful images of bomb‑damaged churches and landmarks—especially his iconic studies
